Failing to Provide Evidence of Claims Lands “True the Vote” President and Board Member in Jail
The president and a board member of True the Vote, a group which advocates for dis-proven voter fraud conspiracies, were jailed recently in Texas, where a federal judge found them in contempt of court.
True the Vote’s president Catherine Engelbrecht and former board member Greg Phillips were accused of defying a court order to provide more information in a civil case focused on the group’s attempts to find alleged fraud related to the 2020 presidential election.
Court filings indicate the two were jailed on Oct. 31, 2022, and are expected to remain in custody until they comply with the court’s order. An attorney for the organization issued a statement saying they are “expediting an appeal” to get the pair released.
Engelbrecht and Phillips are defendants in a suit which includes claims of defamation, libel and slander. The suit was initiated by Konnech, a company that specializes in election logistics software. True the Vote promoted conspiracy theories claiming Konnech helped change the outcome of the 2020 election. Konnech contends the charges are false and the suit is a way for the company to defend itself.
Engelbrecht and Phillips once claimed their organization examined evidence from a hacked server and had access to Konnech’s information. They said the details they saw supported claims of election fraud.
They were asked to provide evidence to support the claim, but have not yet produced any supporting information.
