ProPublica Spotlights the Corporations that Help Fund Election Denying Politicians
When purveyors of false claims end up being well-funded for their efforts, the reach and consequences of their activities can have a much larger impact. This is especially true when those people are politicians who support widely disproven allegations of election fraud.
When these politicians receive ongoing corporate funding, they may see no apparent consequences to their actions, which can lead them to continue their support for false, widely disproven narratives.
To shine a spotlight on this funding, a database of corporate election contributions was built by ProPublica, a nonprofit news-focused organization that supports investigative journalism. The ProPublica database specifically highlights corporations who have donated money to members of Congress who actively denied the results of elections. The data collection also mentions whether those companies announced they were suspending contributions to election deniers, but then resumed contributions at a later date.
The database highlights 228 Fortune 500 companies that provided financial support to those members of Congress who sought to invalidate the 2020 presidential election results.
Currently, Home Depot is at the top of their list, having donated $475,000 via 100 contributions to candidates viewed as active election deniers by ProPublica.
Boeing, AT&T, United Parcel Service, and Lockheed Martin round out the top five. Visitors to the site can click through on any corporate name, to see the full list of candidates who received their contributions.
